▸ PRIVACY
What this site knows about your visit.
The short version: visits are counted on our own server, your IP address is not stored, there is no account to create, and no advertising or analytics company is told you were here.
WHAT IS COUNTED
For each page a person opens, the site records:
- the page's path, without anything after a question mark
- the time
- the site you came from, as a host name only, such as google.com
- whether the request came from a person, a search crawler, an AI crawler or another bot
- a visitor number for the day, described below
When you click from the catalog to a tool's own site, the site records which tool. This is how we learn whether the catalog is useful.
HOW VISITORS ARE COUNTED WITHOUT KNOWING WHO THEY ARE
To count a person once per day rather than once per page, the site combines your IP address, your browser's description of itself and a random value, and keeps only a one-way fingerprint of the result. The IP address is used for that calculation and then discarded.
The random value is replaced every day at midnight UTC and the old one is deleted. After that, nobody can work back from the fingerprint to an address, including us, and a visit on one day cannot be connected to a visit on another.
Never stored: IP addresses, browser descriptions, the full address of the page you came from, or search terms.
Records of visits are deleted after 400 days.
COOKIES
The site sets one cookie, _toolingfor_key. It holds a random security token that protects the page's live connection to the server from being hijacked by another site. It is not used to count or recognise you, and it is removed when you close your browser.
Because that cookie is needed for the page to work and nothing else is stored on your device, there is no cookie banner.
WHO ELSE HANDLES A REQUEST
- Cloudflare sits between you and the site to deliver pages and block attacks. It sees your IP address and the page requested, as any network provider on the path does.
- Fly.io runs the server and its database, in Stockholm, Sweden.
- Axiom stores the server's technical logs in the EU. The logs record the path, time and outcome of a request. They do not contain IP addresses.
There are no analytics scripts, advertising trackers or social media embeds. Fonts are served from this domain, so loading a page does not contact a font provider.
If you write to us, we keep your message for as long as it takes to deal with it, and use your address only to reply. There is no newsletter and no mailing list.
LEGAL BASIS AND YOUR RIGHTS
Counting visits this way relies on our legitimate interest in knowing whether the site is read (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). It involves handling your IP address for a moment, which is why it is described here.
You have the right to ask what is held about you, to have it corrected or deleted, and to object. In practice the visit records cannot be traced to you, so there is nothing we are able to look up or remove for an individual. Email is different: ask and we will delete any correspondence.
You can also complain to a data protection authority. In Sweden that is Integritetsskyddsmyndigheten (IMY).
